We only admit students in the Fall semester.
Deadlines:
The deadline to submit your application for Fall admission is December 15th.
The deadline to submit all supporting application materials for Fall admission is January 1st.
Required Application Materials
To be uploaded as pdfs to the Graduate School application:
- Transcripts from each institution attended. An unofficial transcript is acceptable for the initial review. If you are recommended for admission, the Graduate School will require official transcripts. Additional information about international degrees is on the Graduate School website.
- Coursework (different from transcript). In a list or table format, state all advanced mathematics courses you have completed, are currently enrolled in, or intend to take. For each course give the name of the school where you took it, the course number, the title, description, books used, and the grade you received (for completed courses). If you have more than 20 courses, please include ONLY the most advanced courses.
- Statement of reason for graduate study
- CV/Resume
To be requested through the application:
- Three (3) letters of recommendation that address the question of mathematical promise. These letters should be from mathematics faculty, or other faculty familiar with the demands of graduate work in mathematics.
To be sent by ETS directly to the Graduate School using institution code 1846 (and no department code):
- GRE general scores*
- GRE subject scores*
- (if applicable) English proficiency exam scores
*For Fall 2021 applications: The GRE exams are recommended but due to the current COVID-19 pandemic we expect that many will not be able to take them. Students will not be penalized for not having them.
To review the status of your submitted application, sign into MyUW with your netID. Any requests for information or changes in your status will be emailed to you or noted in MyUW.

| Description | The MA-FAS program helps prepare students for competitive PhD level graduate programs and will enhance their chances for admittance to high quality graduate schools. This Master’s program option is structured so that students with basic preparation from their undergraduate institutions can complete it in no more than two years. | The PhD program provides a background in basic and advanced graduate mathematics and requires the completion of a significant piece of original research. The breadth of the department is such that the PhD specialty and dissertation may be in any of several areas of mathematics. |

Analysis I/II (Math 521/522 or equivalent)* Incoming students usually, but not always, have some exposure to graduate level mathematics through graduate coursework, independent study, or research experience. This background often exceeds the minimum requirements for a math major. *Candidates with interest in Applied Math may have a different mathematics background, typically including coursework in ordinary and partial differential equations, and computational science with programming experience in Python, Matlab, or similar language. That coursework should be at a commensurately advanced undergrad level. |
