Math Advising

This page is about advising for current or prospective math majors and math certificate students. For advice on college algebra, precalculus, and calculus, see the placement advising pages.

Advising for Majors and Prospective Majors

Advising in Spring 2021 will be conducted online via Google Meet or by email:

  • To schedule a virtual appointment:
    • Be sure that you are logged into your UW-Madison G Suite account: https://it.wisc.edu/services/google-apps/
    • Visit the Math Advising Appointment Calendar. Select any open time slot to reserve your time.
    • On the day of your advising meeting you will recieve an email reminding you of your appointment. Be sure that you are still logged into your UW-Madison G Suite. You will be contacted via Google Meet: https://meet.google.com/
    • If for any reason you are having difficulty creating an appointment, reach out to an advisor directly by email and we will set one for you!

Advising for Non-Majors, Certificate Students, & Placement

This advising is primarily meant for non-math majors and math certificate students. Questions that are most appropriate for discussing with Kyle Martinez—the placement/undergraduate advisor—are those regarding math course placement, placement testing and retakes, transfer credit questions, enrollment, course prerequisites, declaring the math certificate, or any other non-math major/non-AMEP program questions.

Students with questions about the math major regarding advising, requirements, course selection, etc., are better answered by our major advisors.

Advising in Spring 2021 will be conducted online via remote video/voice meetings or by email:

  • If you have a question that you don't believe necessitates a full appointment, please send an email to Kyle Martinez at klmartinez@wisc.edu with whatever questions you have.
  • If you'd like to make an appointment to discuss something, please email Kyle at klmartinez@wisc.edu to schedule an appointment. (Advising times listed below.) Kyle is available by appointment via:

Before You Contact an Advisor

It is a good idea to run your DARS report before your meeting. For help using DARS, see this helpful page from the Office of the Registrar. If you are not in the College of Letters & Science, you should also bring the major declaration form(s).

What if I don't see the name of my assigned advisor on the list? What if I cannot make it to the office hour of my assigned advisor?

When you declare the math major or certificate you are assigned an advisor (usually the faculty member who took your application). You can certainly return to that particular advisor if you have further questions about the program (e.g. course selection), but you are also welcome to go to any of the other regular faculty advisors, as they will also be able to help.
